夏のソドー島。ある日、スペンサーがボックスフォード侯爵夫婦の別荘をつくるためにやってきた。わがもの顔にふるまうスペンサーにトーマスは競争を挑みます。しかし競争中にブレーキが壊れてしまい、止まれなくなってしまったトーマスは見知らぬ支線に入り込んでしまう。その支線の奥の深い森でトーマスはボロボロになって動けなくなった蒸気機関車に出会う。彼は昔々、日本からソドー島にやってきた、”鉄道の英雄”と呼ばれて活躍した蒸気機関車の「HIRO（ヒロ）」だった。
