何も刺激のない日々に空虚なものを感じている、大学で歴史を教えているアダム・ベル。ある日、何げなく映画のDVDを観ていた彼は、劇中に出てくる俳優が自分自身とうり二つであることに驚く。彼がアンソニー・クレアという名だと知ったアダムは、さまざまな手を尽くして彼との面会を果たす。顔の作りのみならず、ひげの生やし方や胸にある傷痕までもが同じであることに戦慄する。
